Rebooting ............
Like many a computer, this blog and its blogger are in a serious need of rebooting.
The last year has been full of changes for Miss Eff and Honey. Honey has retired. We are slowly learning the Medicare and Social Security systems. Talk about a learning curve!! Being together 24/7 has not been difficult ... but it has been different.
It has called for a change in habits and time-management skills. And to be perfectly honest ...... those changes have been the most difficult for me to grasp.
Last year was about adapting to the new lifestyle This is year ... it is about making changes to the farm. And the farm truly a sustainable way of life.
The farm is charming and sweet and incomplete. Structures age ... storm damage happens ... and as the workload gets heavier and heavier, it isn't easy to get everything accomplished.
But we are making some serious dents in the infrastructures changes in the garden.
One of the biggest areas of change is in the vegetable garden.
We have totally separated the veggies from the flowers. Oh ... you may see a few flowers there .. but most will be doing double duty as pest control or as an edible.
The vegetable garden is now 24' wide by 64' long. It will consist of 4 raised beds marking the corners and two trellises marking the entrances.
The raised beds will protect some of the more tender crops from the few rabbits that dare enter our veggie patch. And they are small enough that we can cover them in case of a late frost.
The cattle panel arches will hold cucumbers and cucamelons. We found the cute tiny cucamelons to be delicious when pickled.
This is the largest vegetable garden we have raised in years. Along with 40 tomatoes we always raise and the bean tunnel from last year, we will have peas, peppers, broccoli, beets, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach and swiss chard.
Hopefully .... we will have some of these for sale.
If not .... there may be a lot of nearly-naked canning going on.
Call ahead. I'm just sayin'.
